2 Topics I Am Exploring In My Life Right Now as a Middle-aged Dad

These are 2 topics I am actively thinking about a lot these days and maybe writing about over the next 29 days:

Topic #1: Deliberate health vs convenient health

My son has a rare disease and has a life expectancy anywhere between someday soon and 50. I want to be capable of helping him lead a full life. He is 10. I also want to live well into my daughter’s adult life. She is 12.

This is why I am interested in deliberate health. I say deliberate because I have come to distrust so many of our societies’ food, lifestyle, medical, and daily habit norms — I have to be 100% intentional with what I do with my body. Convenience robs health in almost every instance.

This all began about 4 years ago when I was 40 lbs heavier. Since then I have gone 95% plant-based, 100% real food, and 1yr+ sober.

The outcome so far. I ran a 50-mile ultra race one month ago and at 49 y/o — I felt amazing.

Deliberate health doesn’t mean crazy things — it actually means returning to habits recently overlooked in our hyper-busy world.

Topic #2: Should I be concerned about my career legacy

My ego craves a legacy. The chip on my shoulder could care less (or does it?)

I have been at the coal face of modernizing the legal profession for over 20 years now. By many measures, I have been successful. Built an award-winning program at a law school. Built a profitable design agency. But I have to admit, sometimes I wonder if anyone in the greater legal market will care or notice when I die. How narcissistic!

I lost two mentors over the last 10 years. Both have different legacies. But perhaps the most important one (to me) is that they were mentors. They fundamentally helped change my life in subtle and direct ways.

So I guess I just answered my own darn question. Who cares about legacy? I should be open to mentoring and helping others coming up. That would likely be the most meaningful path. And who says legacy has to be broadly noted or celebrated anyway?

🎯 Deliberate health and mentor-based legacy-building. These are interesting to me. Are they to you I wonder? I know some on these now but as I explore may share them here.
